Why Your Laptop Is Getting Low FPS in Warzone (Even With a Strong GPU)

If you're running a decent GPU, something like an RTX 4070 or 5070, on a gaming laptop, and you're still getting under 100 FPS or bad frame drops in Warzone, your hardware almost certainly isn't the problem. In the vast majority of laptop cases I see, it comes down to one of three things: a corrupted driver install, background processes eating your CPU, or thermal throttling nobody's monitoring. Here's how to check each one yourself before spending money on anything.
Check 1: Your Driver Install, Not Your Driver Version
If you're using the Nvidia app to update your GPU drivers, that's very likely your issue. The Nvidia app has a known history of leaving driver installs incomplete or partially corrupted, especially after multiple update cycles, and it won't tell you anything's wrong. You'll still get a game that runs, just with hidden instability.
The fix: wipe your drivers completely using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), a free tool built for exactly this. Then install fresh drivers using the standalone Nvidia Control Panel instead of the Nvidia app, and do your GPU tweaks there. This alone resolves a huge share of laptop performance complaints I get.
Check 2: Your 1% Lows, Not Just Your Average FPS
Average FPS is the number everyone looks at, but it's not the number that determines how your game actually feels. If you're averaging 200 FPS but your one percent lows are dropping to 100, that's a 50 percent frame time spike, and it's exactly what makes a game feel stuttery or inconsistent during firefights, even though the average looks fine on paper.
Use a tool like MSI Afterburner or the in game performance overlay to check your lows specifically, not just your average. If there's a big gap between the two, that's your real problem, not your GPU's raw power.
Check 3: Undervolt Your CPU
On a laptop, you can't rely on BIOS overclocking or aggressive cooling adjustments the way you can on a desktop, cooling and BIOS access are both limited by design. What you can do safely is undervolt your CPU, which reduces voltage and heat without reducing performance. On tight thermal laptop chassis, this alone can meaningfully stabilize your frame times.
How I Actually Catch This
I run a free PC check before touching anyone's system, hardware and software both, specifically because issues like driver corruption don't show up unless you go looking. A client this week came to me with an RTX 5070 laptop and an i7 14700H, getting under 100 FPS in Warzone. The free check flagged the Nvidia app driver install immediately as the likely culprit before I ever charged him a dollar.
After a full DDU wipe, clean driver install through Nvidia Control Panel, and a CPU undervolt, he went from 200 FPS with lows dropping to 100, to a stable 220 FPS with lows around 180.
